Museum

Hiroshige and the hand-held fan, a journey through 19th century Japan in 19th century Japan, Musée Guimet, Paris

Exhibition until May 29, 2023

"The Guimet Museum presents for the first time in France a unique group of prints by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) intended to decorate hand-held fans (or simply hand fans). Created between the 1830s and 1850s, they are among the rarest and most elaborate of the artist's work, one of the last great Japanese artists of the Edo period. These hand-fan sheets reveal the graphic inventiveness and diversity of his work from the famous sites of Edo (today Tokyo) and Japanese province landscapes, to bucolic compositions of flowers and birds, through portraits of women, historical scenes, as well as literary or parodic images. Disposable objects, these hand fans have mostly disappeared ; the prints that have come down to us, uncut and in their first edition, are those that were never mounted on their frame and were preserved by print publishers or collectors. Many of these works are now unique or preserved in very rare copies all over the world"
Selection of some ninety works, among the most beautiful of the Georges Leskowicz Collection
