EXHIBITION AT THE CUSTODIA FOUNDATION

On the theme of Plein air painting 1780-1870

5211f1c1b3014ee4ab0f9c9b53967eca
Until April 3, 2022

This exhibition, which brings together over one hundred and fifty oil studies
belonging to the Custodia Foundation in Paris, to the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C, to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge along with a private collection. This exhibition offers a new approach to plein air painting in Europe between 1780 and 1870.
Ger Luijten, one of the exhibition curator has declared :
« We aim at a poetic rather than a didactic presentation of selected works, highlighting both the differences and similarities in the artists approach of very different nationalities, over four successive generations.
These studies have a timeless character and are often very hard to date.Throughout the organization and staging of this exhibition, we shared in artists' enjoyment of producing these works. »
The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive catalog, published in two versions, English and French.
The various essays written by the curators and several leading experts on the topic, Michael Clarke, Ann Hoenigswald along with Anna Ottani Cavina, reflect the latest research on this important aspect of European art history.

Exhibition « En toute discrétion/ discreetly.
Engravings, books and maps from the Michel and Christiane Jacquemin's collection »

affiche2-web
Last days to see the exhibition! Until March 27, 2022

In 2020, the city of Besançon received a large donation from Christiane Jacquemin, widow of businessman and politician Michel Jacquemin (Besançon, 1939-2009) : 600 art prints have enriched the graphic arts cabinet of the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology, while 360 books and 200 maps were added to the municipal library.

In order to pay tribute to this generous gesture and to arouse great interest of the public about this collection, the museum organizes an exhibition presenting a selection of the 250 most beautiful pieces of the donation.
A three-part itinerary shows the thematic axes around which Michel Jacquemin built up his collection, with the support of his wife Christiane.
This is primarily, the world of etching, a technique nicknamed the "painters' process" which seduced the couple and led them to put together beautiful sets of sheets of the 17th (Jacques Callot, Antoine van Dyck …), 18th (François Boucher, Jean-Honoré Fragonard …) and 19th centuries (Paul Huet, Alphonse Legros, Francis Seymour-Haden …).
A second part is devoted to engraved subjects. Portraits, landscapes, scenes of rural or urban life, animal subjects. This complete set of illustrations has been chosen for its human or everyday subjects, immediately understandable, sometimes touching, amusing or inviting to contemplation.

Finally, a third part will allow visitors to experience the tension from Here and Elsewhere that pervades the collection. Indeed, a deep attachment to Besançon and to Franche-Comté can be seen, as evidenced by the old maps of the area or the Jean Gigoux's works that Michel Jacquemin has patiently collected, but also an attraction for the distant, corroborated by travel books, recounting expeditions around the globe that marked the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.. (extract from the presentation)
