BOOK

Alfredo Muller and Japonism(e)

The confrontation of Alfredo Müller's works with the prints of Japanese masters reveals an art imbued with Far Eastern philosophy.
His interest in traditional Japanese prints dates back to a study trip to Paris in 1888.

In 1895, Müller emigrated to Paris shortly afterwards the ruin of his father's house, he eventually settled as an engraver.

In 1900, The merchant Pierrefort ordered him a poster for the coming of Sada Yacco : the only actress authorized by the Emperor of Japan came to present the new Kabuki theater to the World Fair visitors.

The merchant's choice raises questions. The investigation opens up unexpected perspectives.

Thus, the magnificent Commedia dell'Arte scenes of the second Tuscan period, with their puppet-like characters, become a reminder of Tableaux Vivants from the Japonese Theater.
