Museums

Nicolas Eekman, humanist and fabulous engraver,
Museum of Drawing and Original Prints, Gravelines

Nicolas Eekman
Exhibition from Saturday, January 28, 2023 until November 12, 2023
Salle de la poudrière

The museum highlights an outstanding engraver, Nicolas Eekman, a chance to rediscover an artist, on the occasion of the donation of 238 prints and drawings by his daughter Luce. Nicolas Eekman (1889-1973) Dutch painter - engraver, was born in Brussels and moved to Paris in 1921. « If he is not Flemish, he calls himself "Flandrian » as his culture is indeed that of a man from the North. His reference artists are Brueghel ( displayed in the collection exhibition) and Van Gogh (Eekman lived in the rectory of the Van Gogh family from 1914 to 1918). He observes with affection the passions of humankind : the hardworking peasants, the tormented lovers, the dreamy wanderers ...
Engraving reaches its peak of virtuosity in the wood and in the metal, he also gives greatness and humanity to his characters. Eekman is an ardent defender of figurative art, his drawing is an expressionism tinged with cubism, close to the Flemish Expressionists. At the end of his career, his engraving evolves towards imaginery realism.

Henri Rivière - Prints
Catalogue raisonné of lithographs

78767_xl
The complete work of an undisputed master of printmaking.

Henri Rivière (1864-1951 is one of the most emblematic French artists of the highly prized style of lithography. His works, tinged with Japonism, have known an extraordinary destiny since their creation at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries: plates, educational illustrations, Le Chat noir Montmartre artistic cabaret posters, shadow theater and other books. His series of landscapes of Brittany or Paris, « Thirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower » - in the manner of Hokusai - figure prominently in the greatest museums.

The entirety of his lithographs have been gathered and commented, here for the first time, following a persevering collection work by two specialist authors. Their research on the publisher and lithographer Eugène Verneau, regarding the printmaking techniques and diffusion, sheds new light on Henri Rivière.

With 2 bonus features : a preface by the academician Erik Orsenna, in love with the timeless style of Rivière, and neighbor of Rivière's homeland in Loguivy-de-la-Mer. An original work stands for the preface by the great cartoonist André Juillard (The 7 lives of the Hawk,, Glénat Publishing house), author of his own 36 Views of the Eiffel Tower », in the manner of Rivière, he who remains his great admiration."
